Kids Grow Competition, Elder ParkSunday 14 October 2007CONGRATULATIONS JUNIORS!Our Juniors have won the 2007 Nursery and Garden Industry "KidsGrow" Competition, run in partnership with the Horticultural Media Association (HMA). The competition, supported by the Department of Education and Children's Services (DECS), encouraged children from across the state to grow any type of edible product, be it herb or vegetable, in transportable plastic or terracotta growing containers. These products were taken to Elder Park on Sunday 14 October and placed in trolleys, kindly donated by the Coromandel Native Nursery. In evoking the spirit of the early market gardeners pushing their product to market for sale, students paraded their goods to the Tasting Australia site at Elder Park for the final judging. Criteria for the judging was based upon:
1. Health of product (quality) 2. Hygiene of product (no pests or diseases) 3. Information on growing the product (eg: a report on who helped grow, what type of problems did you have growing them and how did they fix it) 4. Display of product (eg: innovation and presentation of project). Michael Keelan, of Radio 5AA's weekend show and Channel 9's popular "Out of the Blue" cooking programme interviewed the children, and visiting international chef, Ian Parmenter awarded our school first prize! We won a $250.00 voucher for the school garden and a mini green house. You can visit our website to view the gallery of photos from the day. Special thanks to Loy Burford, Lynne Davies and the students and parents who as a team ensured that our entry was deserving of the win. |
